As Hurricane Irma menacingly drew closer Florida this week, an online petition requesting that the World Meteorological Association change the name from Hurricane Irma to Hurricane Ivanka reached nearly 13,000 signatures.
“Hurricane Harvey in Houston was a prime example of how climate change makes hurricanes more powerful and dangerous,” the petition reads. “Unfortunately, the Trump administration is on a fast track setting climate progress back, which will only exacerbate the effect of future storms… Even Ivanka Trump, who promised to try to influence her father on certain issues like climate change, has quietly accepted the administration’s lack of action on this very serious issue.”
George Takei, who played the role of Mr. Sulu in Star Trek, gave his own scathing take on the petition.
Wrong to rename Hurricane Irma after Ivanka.
After all, Irma is a powerful fast moving storm while Ivanka is weak, powerless & ineffective.

Ivanka, who was billed as a “moderating force” to the President, has thus far shown that she wields no influence whatsoever in the Oval Office. A supposed outspoken advocate for climate change, she was unable to impact her father’s decision regarding the Paris Climate Agreement. And whereas her past tweets showed her support for DACA, her words had no effect on her father’s move to end the program.
A better option for Hurricane Ivanka could have been 2010’s Hurricane Earl, which was forecast to cause mass destruction, but instead “whipped past NYC and Long Island with a whimper.” There’s a certain White House advisor who fits that bill perfectly.
